A great weekend for the team, as Keir takes first win
After qualifying as the fastest Clio 182, the first race-start of the season didn’t go Chris’ way, but he kept on pace and bought the newly wrapped Powerlite Fitzgerald car home in 3rd* to take his first podium of 2022.
Race 2 was more eventful, after passing last years’ Champion (Jack Dwayne) on the first lap, Chris set his sights on the two Class B cars (battling for 1st) but it wasn’t long before a bizarre clash between them left Chris out in front, as the overall (and class) race leader. He was put under constant pressure by Jack, but Chris managed to keep ahead, crossing the line with just a 0.53 second gap to take his first ever race win. A fantastic achievement and we are sure the first of many.
Newcomer to the team, Alex Hawkins in the second Powerlite Fitzgerald car, also showed great pace in his first track weekend after a very promising transition from a successful rallying career. Qualifying and then also finishing 10th* in a 23 car grid was a great achievement in this very competitive championship. He followed this up with an 11th place finish in race 2, which could well have been a second top-ten finish had it not been for multiple off-track excursions (he was a rally driver afterall).
Gareth Tansey in our Podium Transport Management sponsored car was clearly back to continue his progress from 2021. Following a very good Friday test, Gareth qualified 12th* but after the best start to a race we have seen from him, Gareth finished race 1 in 9th, ensuring all three JG Racing Clio 182’s finished in the top ten (we think this might be a first, don’t quote us).
Unfortunately Gareth was turned around at the start of race 2 by an inexperienced newcomer. This put Gareth at the very back of the field, but as the red mist gathered, Gareth stormed back through the pack finishing 16th*. Not an end to the weekend that reflected Gareth’s overall pace, but we are expecting great results from him if he continues to race like he did in race 2.
Alongside our three Clio 182’s, we also welcomed Hot Hatch competitor Trevor Gregory to the team. Racing in his Area Motorsport prepared Honda Civic Type R, Trevor made a great start to his Class A campaign. Qualifying 8th*, Trevor made progress all weekend, finishing 6th in race 1 and 5th in race 2. In a brand new car there is clearly lots to learn but it was a very respectable weekend. Trevor will be joining JG Racing for all weekends that feature both the ClioSport Championship and the Hot Hatch Championship.
Our next race in just a few weeks time will be at the Silverstone (National) track, as used by the BTCC, on the final weekend of April.
